Hyderabad: Telangana universities teaching and non-teaching staff threatened to go on indefinite strike if the government fails to enhance the block grants for universities in the State. Speaking to newspersons at Osmania University here on Thursday, Prof. Battu Satyanarayana, chairman, Telangana State Federation of University Teachers' Associations (TSFUTA) , said that the chief secretary Rajiv Sharma who assured to resolve the issues like enhancement of block grant, pensions, etc failed to do so till date. .

“The government swiftly responded and called for a meeting when we protested at administrative buildings at all universities on November 13,” Satynarayana said. He added that despite regularly pursuing matter with the government, their efforts went in vein.

“As per chief secretary’s assurance we suspended the agitation and now we are forced to take it up again. So far, the government did not release the grant. If the government fails to resolve the issues, we will go on an indefinite strike,” he warned. Satynarayana urged the government to resolve the issues immediately to avoid unpleasant situations in the university campus. He said that series of protests have been planned and as part of it, a round table conference on finances of the universities would be held on December 10.

“Rallies and vanta varpu (cooking on roads) will be held in all State universities on December 17 and December 23. All the universities will be shut on December 30,” he warned. Kanche Manohar, president, TUNTEA, said that the government has to immediately enhance block grants to meet salary and pensions of the employees. He demanded that employees should be given extension of employees’ health card as per GO Ms No 68.

Teachers demanded the government to regularise time-scale employees under non-teaching category and take up recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff for existing vacancies. Teachers also demanded the government to enhance age of superannuation up to 65 years in accordance with the UGC regulations. They urged the government to appointment Vice-Chancellors and constitution of executive councils in the universities.
