Hyderabad: All district prisons in Telangana will have landline phone facility as the jail department has decided to extend telephone facility with safety devices, which is currently available only in Hyderabad Jails. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between DG Prisons & Correctional Services with Deepija Telecom Private Limited on December 5 to this effect.

The telephone services, which were requested by prisoners on par with the facilities in Chanchalguda and Cherlapalli jails will be extended to district Jails of Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Sangareddy, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Khammam and Prisoners Agricultural Colony, Cherlapalli.

The State Prisons Department has also taken measures to start video conferencing system in all jails in Telangana. Earlier, it was functional only in Central Jail, Hyderabad. All the courts and all districts jails will now be linked with this facility. “This will help timely hearing of prisoners and also reduce the cost, time consumption and risk of the police in escorting prisoners to courts. This is a big step in modernisation of prisons in Telangana State,” said Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, V K Singh.

The department has also decided to install ‘mobile jammers’ for containing the problem of mobile usage inside the prison. The jammers would be installed in Cherlapally and Chanchalguda prisons by December end.
