Centre considering amendment to AP Re-organisation Act

Hyderabad: The proposal of the central government to amend the Andhra Pradesh State Re-organisation Act 2014 is causing worry among the Telangana BJP leaders. With the Centre not giving any indication as to what the amendments are likely to be except that it is meant to rectify anomalies that rolled into the bill --drafting the Bill by officials under pressure from the then political bosses, the TS BJP leadership does not know how the Centre proposes to balance the interests of both the states.

The State party leaders feel that TRS, which has been successfully playing on the sentiment factor, may use the situation to stall the growth of BJP in the State. BJP may even be forced to face an uphill task during the ensuing GHMC elections, they aver. The Telangana BJP leaders feel that with TDP being a partner in the NDA government and the ruling party in AP, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is certain top put pressure on the Centre to see that the amendments weigh heavily in favour of the residuary state. If that happens the party would be in for another jolt and may face the kind of situation that the Congress party faced despite carving out the separate Telangana State.

It may be recalled that the central leadership of the BJP was divided on the issue of bifurcation. While leaders like L K Advani and Narendra Modi were not so forthcoming on the issue of separate Telangana, others like Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh were categorical on dividing the state and hence they launched their campaign from Andhra Pradesh. They wanted to see that BJP under the leadership of Modi would get the credit of dividing the state. But with Congress having taken the decision at the eleventh hour, the BJP lost the chance to take full credit.

It received another jolt when BJP decided to enter into an alliance with the yellow party and with Naidu romping home in Andhra Pradesh and also having joined the Modi government at the Centre, the TS BJP finds in a piquant situation. It cannot take on Telugu Desam Party in Telangana and the state leadership is not willing to sail with it
