Bhupalpalli (Warangal): Assembly Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary said that the state government was committed to bring qualitative changes in lives of nomadic Chenchu tribes.

Efforts were being made to bring the Chenchu tribes into mainstream by providing them education, housing, nutritious food and medical assistance, the Speaker said. He laid foundation stone for a safe drinking water scheme to be implemented at a cost of Rs 12 lakh at Chenchu Colony in Regonda mandal of Warangal district on Tuesday.

The Speaker also inaugurated a mega medical camp organised for the Chenchu tribals living in the colony. About 50 doctors from various medical institutions of Warangal and Hyderabad conducted screening and distributed free medicines.

Over 1,000 tribals from 15 villages attend the medical camp.

Madhusudhana Chary informed that he would also distribute new clothes to all the residents in the colony on January 1. “It is sad to note that Chenchus are still leading a wandering life far away from the mainstream,’’ he added.

The fruits of development should reach the tribals and that was why various programmes for their uplift were being organised. He appealed to the society members to come forward to support such activities.

It may be noted that following the initiative of the Bhagavan Mahavir Charitable Trust of Hyderabad, free meals are being provided to the Chenchus in the district for five days during every month. Regional Health Director Nageshwar Rao, DMHO Sri Ram and others were present.
