Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma ruled out Maoist activity in Telangana, however, he said Maoists were trying to sneak into the State from Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra and were committing the offence. The LWE (Left Wing Extremism) activities in the State are under effective check due to strict police action against the Naxalites.

During the year, four extremists’ murders were reported as against five in 2013 and after formation of the State, only one incident of extremist murder was reported. “We are not relenting in any manner,” the police chief said, adding that the police units were good enough to tackle Maoists.

Referring to the gunfire exchange between police and Maoist in Khammam district on Sunday, he said acting on a tip-off, the district SP directed a special police team to check for the Maoists’ movements in their attempt to set afire Satyanarayanapuram cell tower in Cherla mandal of Khammam district. A group of 10 to 15 extremists had come to the village to set afire the tower. “The extremists opened fire and police retaliated.

The exchange of fire lasted for an hour. The extremists fled leaving behind petrol cans, wood and other material including three guns,” the DGP informed. Sharma said police were aware that Maoists would definitely try to regroup in the State. “Our team is prepared to prevent them from entering into the State,” he said.

The Maoists have called for a bandh in Warangal and Khammam districts on Monday to protest killing of a tribal youth by police a few days ago. There were seven exchanges of fire between police and Maoists this year. One extremist was killed in one of these gun battles. As many as 68 Maoists surrendered and 18 arrested during the year, he revealed.

Maoists had been making efforts to cross into Telangana from Chhattisgarh by crossing Godavari River in Karimnagar district. Referring to a recent such incident, Sharma said this could not be termed as an attempt for resurgence. Greyhounds have been divided between Telangana and AP. “We are also giving special training to district police officers to ensure that our forces are not lacking in any aspect,” the DGP added.
