Patrol vehicles in city to have GPS-enabled system to monitor their movements

Hyderabad: Policing in the city is going to be a tad ahead of its time with patrolling vehicles being equipped with most-modern gadgets to help higher ups monitor their movements. As an initial measure, all police patrolling vehicles belonging to Cyberabad Police Commissionerate will be under the radar of a single command control, with the help of GPS (Geographical Positioning System). Each vehicle will have a GPS device attached to it, to know its exact location.

Besides advancements in CC camera technology, the Commissionerate, which held Safety Hackathon in November with volunteers of HYSEA (Hyderabad Software Exporters Association) and the Hyderabad Hackers’ Alliance (HHA), has decided to install GPS device in all the vehicles. As part of this, recently the Cyberabad Police successfully installed the device to an interceptor vehicle in Madhapur. Two vehicles under Gachibowli and Raidurgam police stations also adopted this new technology. These vehicles are directly monitored by higher officials from now on.

The device, which was developed by one of the city-based IT solutions, was endorsed by the Commissioner, CV Anand for its capability to address the tracking problems during the concluding session of the Hackathon on November 15. After the successful installation of the device, about 23 more vehicles under the commissionerate would be installed shortly.

According to officials, this device can be activated with the help of internet, cell phone signals and satellite. This small device, with the size of a cell phone, is being installed to patrolling, interceptor and Blue Colts vehicles. The device gets activated once the vehicle is started and linked through software to the control room, zonal and divisional levels. The officials will be able to monitor the vehicle movement and alert the nearest vehicle at the time of emergency.

The information appears in the form of graphic representation to the official who is logged into the system. Apart from identification of the position, the system helps provide the details of the vehicle in Job Chart Tracking for knowing details of time it spends in a particular location. The Report Chart, on the other hand, provides details of distance travelled. The device will also have SOS alert.
