Tension prevailed at Kagaznagar in Adilabad district on Monday as police resorted to lathicharge to disperse Sirpur Paper Mills workers who tried stage road blockage. The workers called for bandh demanding reopening of the mill.

Police arrested BJP and TDP activists who expressed their solidarity to the workers and enforced the bandh.

BJP and TDP activists along with workers tried to block traffic on Hyderabad-Maharashtra inter-state highway. The police arrested the BJP and TDP workers and shifted them to the police station. The police resorted to lathi-charge when the workers tried to stop the arrests.

The workers alleged that the government and the company management had not initiated measures for the reopening of the mill, though it was closed three months ago.

They staged a protest in front of the police station demanding the release of arrested leaders and raised slogans against Chief Minister K Chandrashekara Rao and Home Minister N Narasimha Reddy.
