Adilabad: Enthused by favourable atmospheric conditions, farmers in Adilabad district are evincing keen interest in raising apple gardens.

Cotton is the main crop in the district. However, recently scientists from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, visited Adilabad district and found that the district has favourable conditions for raising apple plants.

The scientists found that favourable conditions were available in the mandals of Kerameri, Jainoor, Narnoor and Bazarhathnoor mandals. Places which record high rainfall and low temperatures are ideal weather conditions for apple cultivation. Temperatures in the range of 4 to 5 degrees Celsius would be favourable for apple growth. On December 20 last year, a minimum temperature of 3.9 degrees C was recorded in Kerameri mandal. This mandal also receives rainfall during summer.

Adilabad district has beautiful hills, ghat roads and it has pleasant weather conditions even during summer. The district is rich in natural beauty. The scientists have also produced an apple seed which would help raising apple plants even in areas which record minimum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius. Scientists are carrying out experiments and planning to raise the apple gardens in the districts of Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Adilabad district in Telangana State.

Kerameri mandal has been identified by the CCMB scientists as the most ideal mandal for raising apples in Adilabad district. The scientists also suggested that the farmers can raise strawberries, cherries and grapes in the mandal. The farmers were currently taking up cultivation of oranges and mangoes in Kerameri mandal. Weather conditions similar to States like Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir prevail in Adilabad district. Following the advice of the scientists, farmers in the district are now planning to take up cultivation of apples. Some of them expressed desire to raise apple crop instead of cotton. They believe that they can overcome the debt burden and earn profits by raising apples.

However, mostly tribal farmers reside in the mandals identified as suitable for apple cultivation. They are eagerly looking forward to the State government to extend help to them in the form of subsidies so that they can raise apple gardens.
