Educational institutions bandh which was observed on Thursday following a call given by the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in support of their demand passed off peacefully.

Warangal: Hundreds of students affiliated to different student unions took to streets across the district on Thursday demanding immediate release of pending scholarships and fee reimbursement dues. Educational institutions bandh which was observed on Thursday following a call given by the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in support of their demand passed off peacefully.

The bandh was successful as the managements of majority institutions closed the institutions voluntarily. The student unions organised protest rallies and burnt effigies of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao across the district condemning the delay in releasing the dues. At district headquarters, the PDSU activists took out a rally from Nakkalagutta to Telangana Martyrs Memorial at Adalath and staged demonstration. Their attempt to burn the effigy of the Chief Minister was thwarted by the police and the union leaders were arrested.

Speaking on the occasion, PDSU district secretary P Yakaiah and city wing secretary N Ravinder alleged that despite several petitions and protests, the state government was acting indifferently in addressing the issue of fee reimbursement. It was sad that Telangana Rashtra Samithi government which came to power because of the sacrifices of 1200 students and youth was neglecting release of scholarships and fee reimbursement dues pending since one year. PDSU activists B Kartheek, M Prasad, B Mohan, Devilal and others condemned the arrest of the union leaders by the police even though they were protesting peacefully.

At Kakatiya University, the activists of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) led by union KU in-charge A Karthik burnt an effigy of the CM Even as the academic year was coming to a close, the government failed to issue a GO clearing the pending dues, he said. As a result the students were subjected to a great deal of suffering, he complained. NSUI activists Marka Kiran, Siva Krishna, Varun Teja, Ch Venkatesh, Md Hareef and others participated in the protest.

At KU Arts and Science College at Subedari, the ABVP activists led by its city secretary Rakesh burnt an effigy of the Chief Minister. They demanded that the government should release pending scholarships worth Rs 950 crore immediately. The protesting union members also wanted the government to announce the guidelines for the implementation of FAST programme.
