Hyderabad: Former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma along with his daughter and former minister Agatha Sangma along with the president and organising committee members of Tri-centenary celebrations of Global Telugu Catholic Families met Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao at his Begumpet Camp Office here on Saturday.

The delegation submitted a memorandum urging him to accord minority status to all Catholics irrespective of caste for reservations in educational institutions and government jobs.The memorandum said Catholic Christians were facing huge problem with respect to burial grounds. At times, people had to take the deceased to hundreds of kilometres for burial, it said and requested the government to allocate lands for burial grounds close to where people live.

They also told the Chief Minister to put pressure on the Central government to extend SC status to the Dalit Christians (and Dalit Muslims) in order to eradicate the long-standing unconstitutional order and discriminatory practice. Among other demands, prominent were to ease out heavy burden of property tax levied on the Church-run educational institutions which rendered educational service to the weaker sections unlike corporate schools. Around 1,000 different schools from primary to high school level are run by Catholic churches in Telangana.
