Telangana Agricultural Workers’ Union plans to urge the State government to involve farm labourers in Mission Kakatiya

Hyderabad: The considerable drop in Rabi sowing area for 2014-15 in Telangana has directly hit agricultural labours with lakhs of them unable to find daily works. As a result, many of them are migrating to Hyderabad in search of livelihood. However, the sad part is most of them cannot find work as desired due to slump in construction activity and other factors.

In this backdrop, leaders of Telangana Agricultural Workers’ Union had come up with a different idea. They want the Telangana government to pitch in and provide alternative works for them. According to its general secretary B Venkat, services of agricultural labourers could be utilised in ‘Mission Kakatiya’ works.

He pointed out that at least 200 to 300 labourers would be available in each village to carry out works related to restoration of water bodies. Venkat expressed displeasure about government’s lack of interest to address the issue despite exodus of agricultural labourers to State capital.

Agricultural workers migrate to Hyderabad mainly from Warangal, Mahabubnagar, Medak and Nalgonda districts. However, their hopes to do some sort of work to feed their families are getting dashed. Already half of the labour who daily turns up at ‘labour addas’ in various parts of the city are returning empty handed without any work. Now, agriculture labour from districts is testing their luck at these ‘overcrowded labour addas’ for the last few weeks. As usual, most of them are remaining idle without work.

Moreover, the slump in construction activity has added to their woes. Hence, not much construction works are there in these days for labour, opined property experts. Also, NDA government's decision to tone down NREGA scheme has compounded the woes of agricultural labourers.

Union leaders pointed out that labourers used to be preoccupied with works till April during Rabi season. If Centre’s decision was a blow, the fall in acreage due to late sowing in Rabi in Telangana proved to be a major setback for workers, Venkat felt.

Meanwhile, Telangana Agricultural Workers’ Union has decided to meet a few Cabinet ministers to press for their demand of utilising village labourers in Mission Kakatiya works. “We hope to meet Agricultural Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Labour Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy besides Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao in this regard,” they said.
