Nagoba Jatara commences
Week-long Nagoba Jatara began on a grand note at Keslapur in Indravelli mandal of Adilabad district on Monday. The Nagoba jatara is an annual religious event of the Gonds. The Mesram clan of Gonds, which considers Nagoba or Nagendra its ‘Mool Purush’ or progenitor, will gather at Keslapur for the annual jatara to worship the serpent God. The tribals worship Nagoba with the sacred water collected from River Godavari on Pushya Amavasya every year.

Adilabad District Collector Jagan Mohan and ITDA PO attended the festival on behalf of the State government. Apart from local Gonds, the Mesram clan of Gonds from the States of Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh arrived at Keslapur to take part in the festival. The tribals strongly believe that their wishes get fulfilled if they worship Lord Nagoba. The childless couples believe that they would be blessed with children if they offered prayers to the Lord.
There is also a belief that those suffering from ‘Sarpa Dosha’ will be relieved of their troubles if they worship Lord Nagoba. Nagoba Jatara reflects the culture and tradition of Adivasis. A ceremony ‘Bheting’ is also conducted on the occasion of the Jatara. New brides and bridegrooms are introduced to members of the tribal community during Bheting.
The Gonds will not allow the young couples to take part in Nagoba Jatara without attending Bheting. The in-laws of the bride also attend the ceremony. The government has made arrangements for pilgrims attending the Jatara.
