Khammam: It was a narrow escape for those travelling in a granite-laden lorry as a pillar of the bridge built across the NSP canal near Pallegudem collapsed seconds after the vehicle crossed the bridge on Sunday morning. Traffic came to a grinding halt on the busy Khammam-Mahabubabad road as the bridge is on the verge of collapse after one of its pillars crumbled.

Acting swiftly on the directions of Minister for Roads and Buildings Tummala Nageswara Rao, R&B Superintending Engineer Satish Kumar along with his staff rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. The traffic was diverted as a precautionary measure. The Minister spoke to R&B Principal Secretary Sunil Sharma and Khammam District Collector K. Ilambarthi and discussed about the possibilities of installing a Bailey bridge to restore the movement of vehicles on the route on war-footing.

Stating that they had made arrangements for an alternative route, Satish Kumar said that they were verifying the possibility of installing a Bailey bridge.

The bridge has been in a pathetic state for a long time, however, there was none to look after it, the locals said, pointing to heavy vehicle flow in the region.

With famous Teerthala jatara just a fortnight away, the locals demanded restoration of the bridge immediately when former minister and Palair MLA Ramreddy Venkata Reddy came to see the partially crumbled bridge.
