The Modi government sacked Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami late on Wednesday night for allegedly trying to stall the arrest of Saradha scam accused, former minister Matang Sinh.

An official source in the Ministry confirmed in a terse one line and said: “The Home Secretary has resigned.” Mr. Goswami is the third top-ranking bureaucrat that has been shunted out since the Modi government took charge. Earlier, in January the tenures of Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh and DRDO chief Avinash Chander were crudely cut short and they were asked to resign.

Goswami, who was summoned by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday morning, has admitted to calling the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials dealing with the Saradha case.

Goswami was due to retire by the end of June, but has been curtailed following the serious charges. He remained unavailable for comment till late into the night but attended to routine office work till late in the evening and also held a meeting with Defence Ministry officials.

Goswami was popular in both Telengana and AP for his stellar role in the process of state bifurcation and had visited Hyderabad city several times. He was the key architect of appointing the Justice Srikrishna committee on the feasibility of granting separate statehood to Telangana.
