Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday urged the Chief Election Commissioner H S Brahma to act on delimitation of constituencies in the wake of the bifurcation of the united Andhra Pradesh. As a result, there are only 119 MLAs in the Telangana Assembly but according to the AP Reorganization Act 2014 this could be increased up to 153.

New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday urged the Chief Election Commissioner H S Brahma to act on delimitation of constituencies in the wake of the bifurcation of the united Andhra Pradesh. As a result, there are only 119 MLAs in the Telangana Assembly but according to the AP Reorganization Act 2014 this could be increased up to 153.

A highly placed told The Hans India that the Chief Minister wanted to get this done at the earliest so that there will be new constituencies presumably which could electorally benefit the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi. The TRS supremo also asked Brahma to increase the number of Rajya Sabha seats from 7 to 8 but the latter did not give any assurance in this regard.

The Chief Minister also requested the Election Commission not to allot any symbols that could resemble with its car symbol. In the past the party complained to the Election Commission that the election symbols of independents such as autos and other four wheelers like train engine and lorries created confusion among the rural voters and have had voted to them in the place of selection ‘the car’.

The recommendations of the last Delimitation Commission will remain in place until 2026 but with the birth of Telangana as the 29th state, there is a need for another commission that will look exclusively at Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. However the Central government has to take the initiative or it can bide its time.
