Mahabubnagar: With the implementation of the much-publicised Mission Kakatiya, aimed at providing irrigation water and reviving/repairing tanks in Mahabubnagar, one of the most backward districts in the State, a sea change is expected to be brought about in the lives of rural farmers and boost the rural development activity.

The progress of the district was hampered for long by the previous State governments. They all made promises but failed to do anything worthwhile. Four lift irrigation projects intended to provide water to eight lakh acres and announced with fanfare ten years back failed to take off. Many such projects have been languishing for years due to government indifference.

This has dashed the hopes of farmers, forcing them to migrate to other districts and neighbouring States for livelihood. In such a gloomy scenario, the Telangana State government, headed by K Chandrashekar Rao, has decided to take up Mission Kakatiya on a war-footing to make districts, like Mahabubnagar, lush green. It is giving hopes to small and marginal farmers, with crop prospects brightening once the tank revival schemes are completed.

The district officials identified 7,396 tanks for development in the next five years. They have prepared schemes to revive 1,477 tanks in the first phase, after completing 40 per cent of the survey work for undertaking repairs. An amount of Rs 16 crore has been sanctioned for the scheme. Tenders are to be invited shortly for taking up the work, according to Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao.

The Minister is critical of the previous governments for paying scant attention to tanks in the district, not bothering even to desilt them. This has caused immense harm to farmers who solely depend on irrigation tanks for raising crops. Rao has advised the TRS activists to take up the task of diverting the desilted earth into the lands of farmers, without resorting to any corrupt practices.

The Minister is hopeful of checking the regular annual migration of the poor to eke out a living in others districts/States once the Mission Kakatiya is successfully completed.
