Nizamabad: Encroachments on lakes, ponds and fertile agricultural lands were going on unabated in the city with the connivance of political leaders and officials of the revenue department. Unfortunately, those who were supposed to protect the lakes and water bodies and increase the ground water resources, have started playing a key role in the encroachments by realtors who are planning to build apartment complexes and shopping malls on them, thus destroying the water resources.

After upgrading the Nizamabad municipality into a corporation, three among the four lakes, the Ramarthi Lake, the Nagaram Lake and the Raghunatha Lake have been encroached and the remaining one, Arpapalli lake, is on the verge of becoming extinct. Nobody was taking interest in protecting the Raghunatha Lake, which is being encroached unabashedly.

The TRS government has not released any funds so far for its development or upkeep. The government is not making any efforts to remove the accumulated silt making the water muddy. As the lakes are without trench cuttings, they can be easily encroached with the support of local politicians.

Industrialisation was also responsible for the disappearance of lakes and ponds. In places where there should be lakes, ponds and tanks, there are shopping malls, apartment complexes and function halls. What is more, the encroachments are spread over river banks and on fertile agricultural lands of farmers.
