Hyderabad: The Excise and Prohibition Department has estimated that as much as Rs 2,000 crore a year could be generated by allowing sale of country-made liquor, ‘desi daru’ a la Maharashtra. A report in this regard was submitted to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

The Excise Department, which recently conducted a study on ‘desi daru’ in Maharashtra, found that opening of arrack outlets would help curb rampant illicit distillation of arrack, called “gudumba” and its supply network spread in districts.

The team headed by Assistant Commissioner, Excise Department, Ranga Reddy district, A Rajasekhar, submitted the report to the Chief Minister. The report detailed information on arrack shops in Maharashtra.

The liquor was sold at rate of Rs 17 per 90 ml in Maharashtra generating Rs 3,000 crore revenue annually.

All villages in the neighbouring state have ‘desi daru’ outlets being maintained by the Excise Department. “This has helped the Maharashtra government to successfully curb illicit-distilled liquor supply by bootleggers,” said a senior official of the Excise Department. The official, speaking with The Hans India, said that the department sent proposals to the Chief Minister explaining about the benefits of the opening arrack shops in Telangana.

At present, the Excise Department is contributing Rs 10,500 crore to the State exchequer. If the government gives approval to open arrack outlets, another Rs 2000 crore would be generated. The establishment of arrack shops would attract investments from liquor manufacturers, the report said.
