Many contenders for single MLC seat

Hyderabad: The differences within the Telangana Congress party have once again come to fore as the race for nomination for the Legislative Council seat has begun. TPCC will get one MLC seat under MLAs quota as the Congress floor leader D Srinivas will be retiring in March.

Among those who are in the race for this lone seat are the TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah, former ministers Danam Nagender, D Sridhar Babu, former MP, M Anjan Kumar Yadav. D Srinivas is also aspiring to be re-nominated to the council. However, sources in the Congress party claim that leader of Opposition in Assembly K Jana Reddy is not in favour of Ponnala nor does he want D Srinivas to be renominated.

If any one of these is provided the chance in the Legislative Council, given the seniority, they would be holding the post of Floor Leader in the House and Jana is said to be opposed to this. He is of the opinion that if a comparatively junior leader like Danam Nagender gets elected then either Shabbir Ali or Dalit leader M S Prabhakar can become the floor leader.

Party sources claim that the manner in which Ponnala had organised the padayatra opposing the shifting of the chest hospital and Secretariat was one of the attempts to draw the attention of the party high command and tell them that he was being proactive on issues pertaining to the state. Interestingly, leaders like D Srinivas and Jana Reddy did not participate in the rally.
