As anticipated, the Government of Telangana has started implementing its proposal to ban entry of journalists into the Secretariat. In the first phase it has barred entry and presence of Journalists in the C-Block which houses the Chief Minister’s office and a part of the General Administration Department.

The security personnel (police) on duty at the C-Block went inside the Chief Public Relations Officer’s (CPRO) chambers on the ground floor of the building and asked the print and electronic (television) media journalists to leave the C-Block around 2.45 p.m. stating that they had received orders from the Information & Public Relations Department not to allow them inside the building.

The security men also went round the other floors of the C-Block to check whether there were any journalists meeting other officials. It was only last week when barring the journalists into the Telangana Secretariat complex was discussed at the Principal Secretaries meeting with Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the senior officers were learnt to have complained that they were unable to function freely due to the “disturbance” caused by journalists visiting them frequently.

Several ministers were also stated to have made similar complaint with the Chief Minister. Later that week, the Chief Minister told at meeting of journalists convened by the Telangana State Press Academy that there was a need to regulate the entry of journalists into the seat of administration so that only serious professionals were allowed to collect information.

The Chief Minister arrived at his office in C-Block this afternoon and minutes later the journalists were asked to leave the building. .GAD officials said there was nothing new in blocking the entry of journalists from crucial CMO and other sections. "You cannot enter any offices in Secretariats of Tamil Nadu or other states even if you have an accreditation card. All the reporters are allowed up to the newsroom in secretariats and made to wait there till summoned by whooever wanted to address press conferences," he said.
