Hyderabad: While outbreak of swine flu had dealt a serious blow to Tourism sector in a few states, especially Rajasthan and Maharashtra, luckily there was negligible impact on Telangana Tourism. The number of domestic and foreign tourists who visited Telangana State during winter season (November and December) was quite encouraging. In fact the number of foreign tourists who visited Telangana during December was 12,801, which in fact was the highest compared to other months in 2014.

Swine flu cases were reported from first week of November and sudden spurt was witnessed during December but that did not deter tourists from visiting Telangana State. This was in complete contrast to situation seen in other states. According to a recent assessment by ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India), Rajasthan and Maharashtra are expected to lose a huge Rs 5,500 crore on tourism and aviation sectors due to the disease taking epidemic proportions.

Rajasthan, with major tourist spots like Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer, attract a fairly large number of foreign visitors during winter season beginning November-December and running through end of February and first week of March. With tourists figure coming down drastically, the industry body urged both state governments to take immediate measures to address the issue.

If we take the case of Telangana, the number of domestic tourists who visited Telangana in November stood at 46.5 lakh and this figure slightly increased in December (nearly 51 lakh). While the number of foreign tourists who thronged Telangana was 5466 in November, the figure almost doubled during December, when 12801 foreign tourists visited the state for sightseeing of scenic locations mostly in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar and Warangal districts.

Interestingly, the number of foreign tourists who visited Telangana districts in November and December, 2014 (18267) was marginally higher when compared with corresponding months in 2013 (17918) when the state was undivided. Speaking to The Hans India, Principal Secretary (Tourism and Culture), BP Acharya stated that there was hardly any impact of swine flu scare on tourists preferring to visit Telangana.

He pointed out that they are taking several initiatives to develop more tourism circuits in various districts. This will automatically lead to more number of tourists visiting the state in the coming years, the senior IAS officer felt.
