Hyderabad: The budget session of the Telangana Assembly began on a stormy note on Saturday with Opposition members and TRS legislators clashing in the House during Governor E S L Narasimhan’s address to the joint session. The ‘ugly’ drama was enacted on the floor of the august house in the presence of the Governor on the opening day amply speaks of the stormy scenario that is expected to unfold in the coming days.
Trouble erupted as soon as Assembly Speaker Madhusudana Chary and Council Chairman Swamy Goud escorted the Governor to the podium at 11 am. The TDP and the Congress members holding placards raised slogans against the alleged anti-constitutional policies of the ruling party. They were in fact agitating against the indecision on the part of the Speaker in disqualifying Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Tummala Nageshwara Rao who had defected to TRS from TDP and were rewarded with ministries.
Soon, the TDP, the BJP and the Congress members stormed into the well. While the TDP and BJP members managed to get closer to the podium, the Congress members stood at a distance and protested. The TDP members demanded disqualification of the members who defected to the TRS. Enraged by this, about 30 TRS members also trooped into the well and moved menacingly towards the opposition members.
This led to jostling between the two sides and finally both groups indulged in fisticuffs. The large posse of marshals who were deployed to avert any untoward incident sprang into action and separated the warring groups. Even as the TRS members retreated to their seats, TDP members Errabelli Dayakar Rao and Revanth Reddy and Congress member Sampath climbed on the tables and began hurling speech copies towards the podium.
Some papers landed on the Governor’s chest while some more fell on his sleeve. But, the Governor completed his speech in 14 minutes. The opposition members were so enraged over the ruling party members attacking them that they even forgot they were supposed to the maintain decorum of the house and stand in silence when the national anthem was played. The Governor reprimanded them, making gestures before they realised their mistake and stood in silence. Again when he was leaving the House, the TDP and the Congress members shouted slogans of “Governor down down”.
