Govt says Oppn members disrespected national anthem

Hyderabad: The issue of disrespect to the National Anthem rocked the Telangana Assembly on second day of the budget session on Monday which led to the suspension of 10 TDP MLAs, including party floor leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao for the entire session.

The TDP MLAs were suspended following uproar in the House on Monday. As soon as the House met on Monday, the TDP members rushed to the podium while shouting slogans against the government accusing it of doing injustice to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

They also raised the issue of alleged attack by TRS MLAs on some TDP legislators during the joint address of Governor ESL Narasimhan to the Telangana Legislature on March 7. They also shouted slogans demanding dismissal of Commercial Taxes Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who had defected from the TDP to the TRS. They demanded that the Mala and Madiga communities be given due recognition in the cabinet.

Accusing the TDP MLAs of disrespecting the National Anthem, the minister for Legislative Affairs T Harish Rao said that the members should first offer unconditional apology for showing disrespect towards national anthem and only then they should speak on any other issue. He said that dishonoring the national anthem was the disrespect of the Indian Constitution, violation of oath taken by the members, breach of privileges and against the prevention of insults to national honour act which attracts 3 year imprisonment and also expulsion of members from the house for the full term.

As the TDP members did not come forward to offer an instant apology and wanted that the government first show all the video clippings which have recorded the attack by TRS members on TDP MLAs, Harish Rao moved a motion for the suspension of the members for the entire session. As the TDP members refused to move out they were evicted with the help of marshals.

Protesting the suspension of the members, the TDP ally BJP members staged walk out and also demanded to take action against the ruling TRS members who took part in the whole episode. BJP floor leader K Laxman asked the government as to why only opposition MLAs were being punished and the TRS members were left scot-free . He wanted the government to produce all the video footage recorded and punish the TRS MLAs as well.
