Hyderabad: The government of Telangana is likely to mint money from the sand reaches. The government is expecting that it would be able to garner Rs 500 crore revenue, which would be a quantum jump from the previous years.

Telangana region in the undivided Andhra Pradesh had earned only Rs 2 crore during 2013-14. The government got only Rs 12 crore during 2007-08 and Rs 13 crore in 2009 -2010.

The Minister for Mining and Irrigation T Harish Rao, replying to a question in the Telangana Legislative Council, said it was confident of mopping up Rs 500 crore this year as it had streamlined the system and had plugged all the loopholes. The sand transactions had been made online for greater transparency, the Minister said. Harish Rao held that the government was ready to support industries manufacturing “rock-sand” or “robo’ by extending subsidy, providing concessions in electricity and land.

He said that as the river sand is becoming scarce, the government has decided to extend support for the companies, which have plans to establish rock sand manufacturing units in the State. It would be providing them with 50 per cent subsidy, concessions in electricity and also quarrying and in acquiring land for setting up an units.

He said the government decided to cancel all the sand permits to patta lands and the quarrying would be carried out by Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation. It identified 35 reaches in the districts of Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Khammam and Warangal, which are pending for environmental clearance. For controlling illegal sand mining, the Minister said the government was punishing the offenders with heavy penalties and seizing the vehicles on third time. In Khammam district alone, as much as Rs 456 crores of penalties were levied, he informed.

Harish Rao explained that the government, which announced its sand policy on December 12, had already started online sand booking in eight different places in the State, where highest ceiling was Rs 400 per tonne. “After the government gets environment clearance for 35 reaches, the door delivery of sand would become a reality,” he said.
