Aruna Sunitha duel over alleged roles in liquor, mining syndicates

Hyderabad: CLP Deputy Leader DK Aruna and government whip G Sunitha on Wednesday traded charges against each other in the Assembly over their alleged links with liquor and mining mafia. While the Congress senior leaders alleged that the whip brought disrepute to the women community by having connections with liquor mafia, Sunitha accused Aruna of encouraging mining mafia. Protesting for not giving opportunity to Aruna to speak, Congress members staged a walk-out from the House.

It all began when Aruna said in zero hour, showing newspaper cuttings as evidence that the TRS leader was helping the liquor mafia by using power. She quoted media reports saying that Excise minister T Padma Rao refused to do a favour for a liquor trader who along with Sunitha met the minister in the Assembly lobbies on Monday. It was shame for the whole women community that a legislator came to the rescue of a person involved in an illegal liquor trade.

Strongly objecting to Aruna’s comments, the minister said taking media reports into cognizance and making allegations against the government whip was not proper for a senior Congress leader. Sunitha was like his sister and all the media reports were false, he added. Intervening in the issue, Sunitha dared Aruna to prove that she had links with liquor mafia. She also quoted a newspaper report saying that Aruna was a kingpin behind mining mafia in her Mahbubnagar district.

In a fit of rage, the Congress leader along with MLAs trooped into the well and demanded to prove the allegations made by the whip. Even as the Speaker assured to delete the objectionable comments made by both sides, the Congress legislators stalled the House forcing the chair to adjourn it for 10 minutes. After the resumption of the House, Legislative Affairs minister T Harish Rao tried to pacify the Opposition and urged to stop making allegations based on the media reports. Unheeded to the request, Opposition leader K Jana Reddy demanded to allow Aruna to speak, but the Speaker denied. As a mark of protest, the Congress members staged a walk-out from the House.
