Warangal: A slew of changes introduced in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations are giving jitters to students as well as teachers. The exams are scheduled to be held from March25. Despite the legal hurdles and a chorus of demands to continue the old pattern of examination, the government introduced ‘Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation’ (CCE) system and changed the exam pattern this academic year.

The time has now come for the students to test the waters of the new system. After years of deliberations, the CCE has come into being to bring reforms in the traditional system of evaluation, which had a written exam at the end of the academic term. The nature of earlier mode of examination was such that it essentially tested students’ skills to memorise and reproduce textbook content. It was not only arduous but also put students under enormous stress. On the other hand, the CCE system that includes a school-based and teacher-conducted continuous assessment serves as a tool for diagnosis and to enhance learning levels.

The idea is to integrate assessment with teaching-learning both inside and outside the classrooms. On the flip side, the CCE has a few challenges to face such as inadequate staff, high student -teacher ratio, irregular students and poor infrastructural facilities. The other complaint the CCE was facing is that the system does not allow the students prepare well for the competitive examinations. There is also a complaint against the textbooks prepared by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) that they didn’t properly cover the content required for the competitive examinations.

With just five days to go, the exam fever caught up not only with the 5.65 lakh students but also with the teachers not to mention that parents’ who always feel jitters more than their wards, especially when it comes to the examination of SSC. Speaking to The Hans India, the District Education Officer Y Chandramohan advised the students to go through the question papers thoroughly before answering them. Stating that 54,290 students from the district are appearing for the SSC examinations, he asked the students to make use of additional 15 minutes time given to them to complete the examination.
