  • State govt urged to take up issue with Centre

Initiating a debate on the Appropriation Bill in the Assembly, TPCC president and MLA N Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the committee had recommended the Centre to wind up the age-old practice of procurement of paddy and providing remunerative price to the farmers every year.

The BJP-led NDA government also responded positively, he said. If the Centre implemented the recommendations, farmers would bear the brunt and the agricultural sector would plunge into a crisis since Telangana was one of the biggest paddy cultivating States in the country, he said.

Reddy demanded the government to adopt a resolution against the Centre’s proposal and forward it to the Union government urging it to protect the farmers. The Congress leader found fault with the Centre for bringing in the new Land Acquisition Act, which was against the interests of the farming community.

Terming Budget 2015-16 ‘unrealistic and overambitious’, he said the gap between allocations, release of funds and expenditure in the 2014-15 Budget had clearly shown the performance of the government in implementing the welfare and development programmes.
