Hyderabad: The ambitious Mission Kakatiya programme of the TRS government, aimed at reviving water bodies, is yet to gain momentum. Its nearly three weeks since Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao kick-started this scheme at Sadashivanagar in Nizamabad district but works did not begin even in 1/10th of the set target of 9573 tanks for the first year. According to sources, non-availability of elected representatives and ministers due to budget session of Telangana Legislature and recently held MLC polls in six districts in which leaders and activists were fully involved hampered progress of the works.

Another interesting thing that was revealed was delay on the part of contractors to begin works. As a result, Mission Kakatiya could not take-off as planned in the initial weeks, explained irrigation officials. As on March 29, works began only in 878 tanks in nine districts excepting Hyderabad that was excluded from this drive. This figure is less than 1/10th of number of tanks which the government aimed to restore in the first year (9573). Khammam (262 tanks), Warangal (125) and Medak (102) are the three districts where the programme has picked up in the last few days when compared to other districts.

The number of tanks that were given administration approvals stood at 5915, roughly 60 per cent of the total tanks for the first year. Meanwhile, the irrigation department entered into agreement with contractors on 2464 tanks out of which works began in only 878 tanks (roughly 1/3rd). This reflects that contractors are yet to hit full steam in Mission Kakatiya. When asked about reasons for the slow progress, officials explained that contractors could not get going for lack of auspicious dates.
