Khammam: The Centre is keen on promoting water transport to propel economic growth, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said. The Union Minister, who was at VM Banjara village in Penuballi mandal on Wednesday to launch the road works, said that the Centre will spend Rs 5 lakh crore in the next 10 years on developing waterways in the country.“A plan is on the anvil to convert 101 rivers across the nation into waterways,” Gadkari said, asserting that waterways would effectively bring down the transportation costs.

Stating that the waterway transportation cost is barely 50 paise a km in comparison to Rs 1 by Railways and Rs 1.5 by roadways, he said a slew of steps were underway to tap the potential of waterways in the country. Referring to the 1,620 km-long waterway between Varanasi and Haldia, he said that it would come into operation in a couple of years. Likewise, the Centre has plans to develop waterways in Mahanadi, Brahmaputra, Buckingham Canal and Godavari rivers, he added.
The Suryapet-Devarapalli State Highway will be converted into a National Highway, Gadkari said, while accepting the upgradation of the Sattupalli-Kothagudem National Highway into a four-lane road. Responding to the local public representatives, he said the Centre would verify the viability for setting up of dry port in Khammam district.
Earlier, the Union Minister laid foundation stone for upgradation of NH-221 (New NH-30) between Rudrampur and Bhadrachalam (from kilometre 121/0 to 165/0), AP-TS border to Rudrampur (kilometre 71/200 to 121/000). Together the estimated cost of the work is Rs 539 crore.
Later, he formally laid the foundation stone for the construction of second high-level bridge across Godavari at Bhadrachalam with an outlay of Rs 98.45 crore. Gadkari offered special prayers at the Sri Sitaramachandra Swamy temple in Bhadrachalam before he left for Mahabubnagar on a chopper.
