Six roads to be developed as National Highways

Hyderabad: The Centre has accepted several requests made by the Telangana government including development of six State roads into national highways up to 1018 km and setting up of two dry ports in Telangana, according to Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao.Addressing a press conference at Secretariat here on Thursday, he said the Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari agreed to the demand of constructing two dry ports in the State to navigate the goods containers through waterways that would come up across the country. Nageshwar Rao said Gadkari had agreed for inclusion of river Godavari in the forthcoming ‘Water Transport Bill’ to be placed in the next Parliament session which would include a total of 101 rivers across the country.

The Union Minister had given an assurance to set up two dry ports for which places would be identified soon, Nageshwar Rao said. He said Gadkari also had positively responded to his plea to connecting Godavari river with that of Buckingham River to ensure water transport to Chennai from Basara in Adilabad district. The Union government would accord top priority to dry ports which would play a key role in the State economy in near future, he said. As per Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the existing State roads should be connected to national highways by developing them on par with national standards, he said adding that the total area of the State roads in Telangana were comparatively lesser than that of Andhra Pradesh.

Gadkari agreed to develop a highway from southern Hyderabad connecting Shamshabad to Western Nagapur for which land pooling was done. Efforts made by the State government fructified as Gadkari agreed to most of the State’s appeals, he said. The Union Minister had also agreed to develop Jadcherla-Raichur highway as four-lane highway, extend up to Khammam the 563 national highway which was announced in order to connect Jagityal and Warangal and extend support to construct the best quality cement roads in the State on par with national standards.
