Hyderabad: The Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) has demanded probe into the suicide of a 40-year-old widow due to the alleged harassment by the Sub-Inspector of Doma Police Station of Ranga Reddy district. The deceased, Raheema Bee, took the extreme step in the premises of Doma Police Station on March 29 and died at the Osmania General Hospital on Friday (April 3) night.

According to MBT leader Amjed Ullah Khan, who submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, alleged that Doma PS Sub-Inspector Prem Kumar was harassing Raheema Bee, a resident of Doma village, and her family members since February 15 when her son Mukhtar allegedly eloped with a local girl. Prem Kumar harassed, beat up and abused Raheema Bee, her daughter Haseena Begum, son-in-law.

Although Raheema Bee lodged a missing complaint of her son Mukhtar with the State Human Rights Commission, Ranga Reddy SP and Vikarabad DSP on March 3, no action was taken. Although the girl had returned home, Mukthar remained untraceable. She again approached the authorities fearing that her son might have been murdered by the girl’s family members. “Instead of helping the woman, the Sub-Inspector, Prem Kumar, beat her up and her family members. Felt insulted, she consumed poison in the premises of Doma Police Station on March 29.

She was first taken to Pargi Hospital and then shifted to the OGH where she died last night. However, no policemen visited her even to record her dying declaration,” the MBT leader said. Amjed Ullah Khan demanded enquiry into the incident with a sitting judge of the High Court. He also demanded stern action against the Sub-Inspector and other police personnel and payment of ex-gratia to the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, the Minorities Commissioner has taken-up the matter of Raheema Bee’s suicide and asked the Ranga Reddy District Collector to pay ex-gratia and call for reports from the Superintendent of Police, Ranga Reddy District. In the meantime, the Commission has recommended to provide necessary protection to the family of Raheema Bee.
