Khammam: A Maoist, who is in the rank of a commander, surrendered to the police in Kothagudem on Saturday. Bhadrachalam Assistant Superintendent of Police R Bhaskaran told the media at Kothagudem that the Maoist was identified as Shyamala Dharmaiah alias Dharmanna, 38. He hailed from Tekuleru village in Chhattisgarh. The village is close to Cherla mandal in Khammam district.

The police said the Maoist division committee member Sukhdev influenced and persuaded Dharmaiah to join the banned outfit in 2010. Subsequently, he became a member of Cherla Dalam. During 2012-2013, he was entrusted with the duty of guarding Sukhdev. Later, he was shifted to Sabari Area Committee and was made deputy commander of Cherla Local Organising Committee (LOC). A couple of months ago, he became the commander of Cherla LOC.

The police said Dharmaiah was involved in three incidents of exchange of fire – Kanchala, Kurapalli and Singam. The police claimed that government’s call to Maoists to join the mainstream of life had prompted Dharmaiah’s surrender. It is learnt that Dharmaiah wanted to take care of his sister. The police said Dharmaiah would get all the benefits under the government’s Maoist surrender policy.
