In an encounter near Alair in Nalgonda District on Tuesday, five Islamist militants including ISI operative Vikaruddin were shot dead when they tried to escape on Nalgonda-Warangal border about 100 kms from Hyderabad.

Police sources informed that the militants tried to snatch the weapons of escort personnel and were shot dead by the police.
The five under trials facing terror cases tried to escape when they were being brought to Hyderabad from Warangal jail.

Vikaruddin of Hyderabad was involved in the sensational shooting incident on a police party in Santoshnagar area of the city in 2009. He was also named in the attack on the former Gujarat home Minister Hiren Panda. The five were being brought to the city to be presented in a city court when the incident took place. Vikaruddin was also an active member of the banned SIMI in the past. The entire area where the encounter took place was cordoned off.

In the past five days, this is the second encounter involving militants in Nalgonda district. Last week, two militants along with a constable and a home guard were killed in two separate encounters in Nalgonda District.
