Khammam: Rich tributes were paid to Jyothirao Phule on the occasion of his 189th birth anniversary celebration here on Saturday.

People’s representatives, officials and the leaders of various organisations paid floral tribute to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s statue. Among those who paid tributes by garlanding Phule's statue include Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadipalli Kavitha, District Collector K Ilambarthi, MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar and the leaders of several people’s organizations.

Kavita said Phule was first advocate education for women and campaign for widow marriages. Saivitribai Phule was the head of the school founded by Phule as part of his campaign to promote women’s education.

K Ilambarthi said, “Jyothirao Phule as the founder of Satya Shodak Samaj worked for the welfare of women in the 18th century. He mainly concentrated on three major issues of the society at that time.

Ajay Kumar, speaking on the occasion said, “I am proud to say that I had studied in Mahathama Jyothirao Phule University in Pune. He fought for social equality.”

Social Welfare officer of Backward Classes Venkat Narsaiah, BC leaders Sri Laxmi, Prof Kanaka Chary and others were present.
