Hyderabad: The Congress party is groping in darkness not knowing how to rejuvenate the city wing and face the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Commission (GHMC) polls. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) leadership is a worried lot these days as city leaders like Danam Nagender and Mukesh Goud showing least interest in strengthening the party under GHMC limits. According to sources, these top leaders were not even visiting Gandhi Bhavan often these days.

The Congress party used to win good number of seats in the GHMC polls when it was in power till last year in alliance with the MIM. However, in the post bifurcation scenario, the situation has changed. The MIM has gone with the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaving the battered Congress party to its fate. According to party sources, so far no formal meeting of TPCC with city leaders has been held.

However, it pinned hopes on the MIM that it might distance itself from TRS after the Alair encounter. Since the MIM is in no mood to distance from the pink party, the Congress leadership feels that it has an uphill task ahead. “With BJP-TDP combine on one hand and the TRS-MIM on the other, Congress feels that its poll prospects are doomed,” feels Md Sirajuddin, Chairman of Minorities Department.

TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, who was recently nominated by AICC, is yet to focus on the GHMC elections. He is currently engaged in other issues, including Kisan Khet Mazdoor rally in New Delhi on April 19. The Gandhi Bhavan appears to be busy with meetings including the high-level committee on ‘disenchanted traditional voters’ of the party and one year celebrations of Dr B R Ambedkar. “We are focusing on elections, but the official meetings on these elections are yet to get started,” said MLC M S Prabhakar.

The recently-formed committee led by former PCC president D Srinivas has announced that it would be first touring Khammam and Warangal districts as part of studying the reasons behind ‘disenchantment of voters’. Incidentally, the two corporations will be going to polls in the coming months. However, there is no clear strategy as how to gain voters confidence in these the three corporations, including the GHMC.
