Warangal: A top Maoist leader Alem Bhaskar alias Ravi alias Sukhdev surrendered before the police along with his wife Mote Shyamala alias Sunitha in Warangal on Tuesday.The couple surrendered before the Superintendent of Police Ambar Kishor Jha.

Sukhdev had been acting as Khammam district special guerilla squad in-charge while his wife Shyamala was district committee member of the Maoist party and in-charge of Viplava Mahila Sangham. Sukhdev belongs to Tupakulagudem village in Eturunagaram mandal in Warangal district and Shyamala hails from Avunur village in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh State. Bhaskar was involved in 14 criminal cases in Eturunagaram, Pasra, Tadvai and Mangapet police stations and was allegedly involved in 2002 Ilapur exchange of fire in the district.

He was also involved in the killing of a home guard called N Naresh at Parnashala and killing of two other policemen in an ambush at Kornepalli in 2012 in Khammam district, besides other incidents of violence. Sukhdev is carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head. He was drawn towards People’ War Group while working for Rythu Cooli Sangham and joined PWG in 1999 with the encouragement of his relative Alem Tirupathi alias Bade Nageshwar Rao to work as courier for the party. In 2000 he went underground.

The surrendered Maoist couple said they had given up arms as they found that the Maoist party was losing its relevance among the public and they were suffering from ill health. Speaking on the occasion, the SP AK Jha appealed to the underground cadre of the Maoists to give up arms and join mainstream to take care of their aged parents. The Maoist ideology lost relevance. It was a false notion that power could be achieved through armed struggle, he said.

The Telangana government was offering best rehabilitation packages to the surrendered Maoists and they should make use of it to lead a peaceful life. The cash rewards the couple was carrying would be provided to them soon, the SP added.Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Sanpreet Singh, additional SPs K Srikanth, John Wesley, M Yadaiah, Mulug DSP, Rajamahendra Naik, Eturunagaram CI Kishore Kumar, special branch inspector Mohan Raja and others were present.
