Hyderabad: To bring more accountability, liability and transparency in the government degree college system, the Telangana government has embarked on a project to place information related to the government degree colleges on the websites. Details like infrastructure, faculty member registrations, attendance of the students and faculty, admissions will be made available online on the respective college websites from the next academic year.
The Telagana Commissionerate of Collegiate Education had already directed all the principals of the government degree colleges to create a website of their college and upload all details on it at the earliest. It has also directed to update online data base once in a month which would be linked to the human resource management system. A few colleges like Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet, Indira Priyadharshini Government College for Women, Nampally already have their websites.
“We made it mandatory for all the colleges to upload details on the website by the commencement of the next academic year. For the colleges which do not have buildings, we have provided adequate computers and internet facilities,” said a senior official of Commissionerate of Collegiate Education.
The Commissionerate officials were of the view that by placing information related to colleges on the public domain, it can attract the students and enrollment can be enhanced in the colleges. “Not just that, it brings in accountability among the lecturers. All the information related to the colleges will be placed on the website including attendance of the students,” an official added.
The officials say that government colleges have better facilities compared to the private institutions. However due to poor publicity for the colleges, enrollment has not been up to the mark. Not just sticking to the government degree colleges, the government is also mulling to the replicate this system in the government polytechnic colleges too. When asked whether this would be mandatory for the private institutions too, an official said as of now it is applicable to only government degree colleges in the State.
Publicity for government degree colleges With the number students enrolling in the government degree colleges was not up to the mark, the government has decided to give extensive publicity by reaching out to the people. To this effect, the Commissionerate of Collegiate Education, has directed all principals of the degree colleges to prepare brochures detailing the infrastructure available in the college, achievements, placements, faculty members etc.
It has also entrusted the job of brochure release to the district collectors. Not just brochure, the government degree lecturers were told to conduct huge campaign for the colleges in their districts. “The government degree colleges have best infrastructure and faculty. However, the students are joining in the private colleges as the managements lure with freebies. Instead of giving a chance for the private colleges, government colleges will also indulge in good publicity campaign to attract more students” an official said.
