Hyderabad: The Telangana government informed that there were few takers for the four per cent seats reserved for socially and educationally backward Muslims (SEBCM) in Backward Classes Welfare Hostels’ and was planning to generate awareness among minorities to admit their wards in the hostels at least from the next academic year. According to the Principal Secretary of Backward Classes Welfare Department, the Group of Ministers, during its meeting held on May 8, discussed the issues in-depth.

  • Govt concerned over few takers for seats in the designated hostels
  • Lack of awareness among Muslims; even 4 pc quota not filled
  • Officials in districts and NGOs told to ensure admission of boarders into the hostels

After analysing admissions in BC Welfare Hostels, based on data available with CGG for the year 2013-14, it realised that against the sanctioned strength of approximately 55,691 seats in the BC Welfare Hostels, only a few were filled with the boarders belonging to socially and educationally backward Muslims (under Group-E) who got admission in the pre-matric hostels.

“Even though, there were no written tests for admission into the above hostels, the four per cent reservation is not yet filled. This may be true for the previous years from 2007-08 onwards. The only reason could be that socially and educationally backward Muslims who are living both in the rural and urban areas are not aware about the same. Interestingly, even the BC Welfare Department could not do much in this regard.

There is urgent need to fill the four per cent reserved seats amounting to at least 200 boarders,” the Principal Secretary said. The Principal Secretary also requested the District Minority Welfare Officers (DMWO) in the districts and other NGOs including the Masjid Committee to ensure that boarders from socially and educationally backward Muslims, children/ parents/ guardians submit their applications to the nearest hostels wardens/matrons.

The list of hostels may be obtained from the DD(BCW)/DBCWOs concerned. He requested to cooperate and mobilise the entire Minority Welfare Department and the Socially and Educationally BC Muslims as per G.O.Ms.No.16, BC Welfare (OP) Dept., dt.11.03.2015 to ensure that the poorest Muslims who are struggling for their livelihood to get their wards admitted in the BC Hostels during 2015-16 in the Telangana State.
