Kagaznagar (Adilabad): The officials of the Kagaznagar Municipality are allegedly indulging in the embezzlement of funds, which were released for sanitation every year. Funds, worth lakhs of rupees, meant for sanitation, have gone down the drain due to the blatant misuse.

  • 16.75 lakh sanctioned for dustbins in 28 wards, but only a few wards have them
  • Only two trolleys out of eight to remove garbage are in working condition

The special officers of the Municipality purchase substandard vehicles to remove the garbage and after a few months, they become useless and moved to the garage. In the year 2007, the Kagaznagar municipality purchased an iron dustbin and a dumper placer in all the municipal wards at a cost of Rs 16.75 lakh. Although an iron dustbin had to be placed in each of the 28 wards, but they had been put up only in important wards, while ignoring other wards.

Since no efforts were made to maintain the iron dustbins properly, they got rusted over the years and to shift these dustbins to a dump yard, a dumper placer was purchased. During the general body meeting of the municipality, the officials put forth a proposal to purchase a dumper placer, dumper bins and tractor tyres at a cost of Rs 10 lakh and included it in the agenda.

When Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was the Chief Minister, a programme was launched to remove the garbage from every house (Intinta Chetta Ethivetha) with great fanfare and Rs 1.50 lakh was released to purchase red and yellow garbage baskets, which ended up in a failure.

In 2010, Rs 7.50 lakh funds were released by the State government to the Kagaznagar municipality under the 12th Finance Commission for the removal of garbage and the officials purchased eight auto-trollyes out of which only two were in running condition within a year.

Speaking to The Hans India, here on Wednesday, Municipal Councilor Siddam Srinivas and former councilor Anjaiah said that even in 2011, the 12th Finance Commission allocated funds worth Rs 10 lakh to remove the filth in the 28 municipal wards of the town. With these funds, tricycles were purchased to shift the garbage to a dump yard and for the last four years, these tricycles were lying unused near a water tank in yellagowd thota.

Later, auto trolleys were purchased in 2012, but even they were lying unused. They said that the State government selected some municipalities across the State in 2012 with a view to sanitise and label them as clean cities. Under this programme, funds worth Rs 23.40 lakh were released for the Kagaznagar municipality.

With these funds, the municipal officials purchased 50 pushcarts and 600 plastic dustbins and blade tractor engines but they were also not in working condition. The municipal staff, who were given training to remove the garbage, were also not showing any interest in discharging their duties. Municipal Councilor Srinivas expressed hope that the State government would action to rectify the irregularities in the municipality.
