Hyderabad: With the monsoons just around the corner, the State government is expediting its prestigious programme of Mission Kakatiya for restoration of lakes and water bodies. At a high-level review meeting, along with Chief Secretary Dr Rajiv Sharma and irrigation officials at Secretariat here, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao conducted a video conference with District Collectors in this regard.

The Minister directed the Collectors to complete in time-bound manner the targets given for the restoration of the lakes, ponds and waterbodies. “The Collectors should monitor the restoration works at their level as the monsoon is likely to hit Telangana State in about seven to 10 days,” Harish said.

“It is the time for expediting the works avoiding delay in digging of the lakes and ponds. De-silted soil should be shifted to nearby farm lands,” he said, adding that soil so removed would prove handy for the agricultural works and enable the farmers to reduce the financial burden of purchasing fertilizers. The Minister also opined that it was imperative to make use of organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers to see a rise in farm produce.

Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, district collector D Ronald Ross and irrigation officials participated in the review meeting from Nizamabad. Srinivas Reddy requested Harish Rao to sanction 20 godowns for Nizamabad district. Pocharam said the irrigation officials were facing hurdles in the completion of Mission Kakatiya works due to encroachment of tank lands by villagers. He also thanked Harish Rao and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for sanctioning Rs 230 cores for Mission Kakatiya works in Nizamabad district.
