Warangal: The 16-year wait for the inauguration of Hanamkonda-based Regional Science Centre (RSC) has at last ended. Situated on the Hunter Road at the district head-quarters, the RSC has so far been an example of negligence on part of the successive governments. In 1999, the then Chief Minister of AP N Chandrababu Naidu laid foundation stone for RSCs in Warangal and Vijayawada. Vijayawada centre started functioning in 2005 but the launch of Warangal centre was inordinately delayed, defeating the very purpose of the centre meant to propagate scientific knowledge among students and common people.
Now, the district administration has made arrangements for the inauguration of the centre by the Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari on June 5 as part of the first Telangana State Formation Day celebrations. This was informed by the District Collector Vakati Karuna here on Sunday. It might be noted that after much hiccups, the centre for which initially Rs 90 lakh budget was allocated, got completed in 2014 with a budget outlay of Rs 5.27 crores. An additional one crore was allocated towards procurement of exhibits.
The exhibits were brought from Kolkata based National Council for Science Museums. Warangal RSC which is monitored by the State Council of Science and Technology is the only such establishment in entire Telangana state under government control as Birla Science Centre in Hyderabad is being operated under private sector. Speaking to The Hans India, the council regional project officer S Srinivas said that they were fully geared up for the launch of the centre. The centre would play a significant role in the days to come, promoting scientific knowledge among the students.
Meanwhile, the teaching community in the district has expressed pleasure over the inauguration of the centre. Science teachers V Gurunatha Rao and N Rama Reddy, Jana Vignana Vedika vice president D Prabhakara Chary wanted the state government to develop the RSC as State Science Centre since it is centrally located in the state of Telangana. The centre was actually proposed to be inaugurated by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on September 9, 2014, the day he visited the district to attend Kaloji birth anniversary celebrations.
