Telangana State celebrated its first birthday with customary pomp and gaiety at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad on Monday. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who too completes one year in office, started the day by paying tributes to Telangana martyrs at the Martyrs Memorial at the Gun Park in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: Telangana State celebrated its first birthday with customary pomp and gaiety at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad on Monday. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who too completes one year in office, started the day by paying tributes to Telangana martyrs at the Martyrs Memorial at the Gun Park in Hyderabad.


Later, he unfurled the national flag and inspected the guard of honour at a colourful parade at the main official function, held at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad. After nearly five decades of demand, campaign, politicking and protests, Telangana was formed on June 2 last year. India’s 29th State was carved out of Andhra Pradesh, triggering massive protests in the residual Seemandhra region.

On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent greetings through a tweet: “My best wishes to the people of Telangana on the occasion of their State Formation Day. My best wishes for the State’s development journey.” Chandrashekar Rao unfurled the Tricolor marking the launch of weeklong official celebrations and later took the guard of honor by going round the ground in an open-top jeep.


He then reviewed the colorful parade by marching contingents comprising different battalions of police, home guards, brass band among others. Nearly 500 folk singers and artistes of Telangana Samskruthika Saradhi, led by its chairman Rasamayi Balkishan, also took part in the parade.


It was followed by parade of beautifully decorated tableau of different government departments like Rural Water Supply, Agriculture and Horticulture, Civil Supplies, IT and Industries, Endowments, GHMC, HMR, Police and others. The ones highlighting flagship schemes of the government such as Mission Kakatiya, Aasara pensions, Kalyanalakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak and Haritha Haaram stood out from the rest for their creativity.


Later, the Chief Minister handed winners and consolation prizes to the best tableau and marching contingents. Rao also felicitated 52 eminent personalities from different fields, who were presented with a shawl, a memento besides a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. Meanwhile, crowd turned up in large numbers at Parade Grounds to witness Telangana Formation Day celebrations. Police diverted traffic from morning till noon on the Parade Grounds stretch in view of the fete.

Similar celebrations were held at 30 different locations in the twin-cities. Also political parties and other organisations held programmes in their respective offices on this occasion.
