Elections under Local Body quota

Hyderabad: As election of MLCs under the Local Body quota is round the corner, there is a mad rush for tickets in the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). Former MLCs, district presidents, party seniors and loyalists besides the unlucky ones who missed out tickets during the general election are making efforts to get the party nod.

The MLC elections are scheduled to be held for 12 seats in nine districts, except Hyderabad. Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Ranga Reddy districts have two vacant seats each, while the rest of the six districts have one seat each. In line with the AP Reorganisation Act, Telangana got three MLC seats additionally increasing the total tally from the previous eleven to fourteen.

Since the tenure of two MLCs – M S Prabhakar and Syed Aminul Hasan Jaffri (from Hyderabad) has not been completed, elections are being held for other seats in nine districts, majority of which fell vacant in May. The upcoming elections have come as a welcome breather for key leaders, who have been sulking for the last one year because of not getting due importance from the party. As such the leadership in nine districts is focusing its energies to fall into good books of party president K Chandrasekhar Rao and thus get a ticket.

If we look at contenders from each district, former MLCs Naradasu Lakshman Rao and T Bhanuprasad Rao are likely to get the nod for two seats from Karimnagar quota. Minister P Mahender Reddy’s brother P Narender Reddy and TRS Rangareddy president Nagender Goud besides a few others are vying for two seats from Ranga Reddy.

While Tera Chinnapa Reddy and Bandi Narender Reddy are in contention from Nalgonda district, former MLC Jagadishwar Reddy and TRS leader Madhav Reddy are in the running from Mahbubnagar district. According to party insiders, former MLCs Bhoopal Reddy and R Satyanarayana are the frontrunners for Medak seat.

Puranam Satish (Adilabad) and Balasani Lakshminarayana (Khammam) are likely to get the party ticket from respective districts. Meanwhile the list of aspirants from Warangal is growing with former MLC Konda Murali, TRS loyalists Peddi Sudarshan Reddy and T Ravinder Rao are seen as frontrunners to get party nomination. Party sources are expecting election schedule to be released sometime between June 15 and 20.

EC meet with political parties

Meanwhile, State Election Commissioner Bhanwar Lal has convened a meeting with national and state recognised parties on Saturday regarding the three new MLC seats that have been added into Telangana quota. Mahabubnagar, Karimnagar and Ranga Reddy got one additional seat each and the State Election Commission will be seeking views and opinions of parties on delimitation process. The report would be sent to Central Election Commission later.
