Hyderabad: For the first time, a team of Osmania General Hospital doctors started performing liver transplantation surgery on Tuesday. The surgery is expected to take between 10 and 15 hours. The liver was donated by Inukonda Mamatha through Jeevandan.


Earlier, doctors from the Osmania had done transplantation of kidney, and the latest liver transplantation had proved the expertise of the doctors of the Osmania vis a vis corporate hospitals, where these surgical procedures are being performed, said the hospital sources. Meanwhile, the Jeevandan officials said the liver transplantation has become possible following, a 57-year old, Inukonda Mamatha, from Warangal district, who had been declared brain dead, donated the organ via Jeevandan.


The transplant coordinators from Jeevandan gave counseling to the family members and explained the importance of the organ donation. Two kidneys, one liver, two heart valves and two corneas were retrieved from Mamatha and they were donated to Jeevandan.
