Hyderabad: During last one year the civic authorities have removed 775 encroachments out of 2452 storm water drains which were encroached under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits. The areas where these structures were removed include Balkapur, Kukutpally, Murka, Hussain Sagar surplus nalas,Picket nala, Banjara Hills nala, Yellareddyguda nala, Punjagutta nala, Yousufguda nala, Nagamaiah Kunta nala, Kalasiguda nala, Dandu Mansion nala and Chemical nala(JICA).

According to sources, the GHMC still has a huge task of removing 977 encroachments. Though the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao while launching Swachh Hyderabad campaign had ordered removal of encroachments along the nalas, the civic authorities have not been able to take up the works.

The officials who had told the Chief Minister that they would take up the responsibility to convince the people who were staying in the houses that were built on nalas and would shift them to another place have so far not been able to do so. It may be mentioned here that a budget of Rs 200 crore was allocated for the development of nalas and Rs 55 crore for their maintenance during the financial year 2015-2016. But the authorities till now haven't even prepared ground work to clear the storm water drains though monsoon had set in.
