Deven Sheth, who was inspired by the greenery of Bangalore, started an organisation named ‘GREEN CITY’ on June 5, 2011 on the occasion of World Environment Day.

With the overall cost for each tree touching Rs 2,200, the organisation has contacted leading business houses, businessmen and individuals. Slowly it started getting donations. The organisation, which analysed various species of plants zeroed in on Gulmohar trees, which grow fast. In a short period of 2 years, Gulmohar plant can grow into a big tree.

These trees are not only good for the environment, but also add to the beauty of the city. During summer, one can see the trees full of red-orange flowers with not a single leaf on the tree. This sight is very delightful to the eyes. Till now the organisation has planted around 3,000 saplings in different parts of the city. So far, 2,500 plants have grown big and gained enough strength to sustain on their own. “It is my dream to make Bhavnagar as green as Bangalore.

For that I am working really hard. And I will work towards my dream until last breath”, says Deven Sheth. On June 5, 2009, ‘The World Environment Day’, Vibhavri Ben Dave Dharashabhya of Bhavnagar city, organised a programme to plant 1,111 neem trees from the government grant that she had received. Deven Sheth was invited to the programme.

According to the plan, 1111 neem trees were planted and they were protected with tree guards. A special tank was set up to water the plants. The monsoon showers helped in the growth of the newly-planted saplings. However, due to severe heat in September, the plants started dying due to irregular supply of water. In a bid to save the plants, Deven Sheth, thought of watering these plants himself and protect them.

So, he began watering plants thrice a day – twice while on his way to factory and back home and another additional round in the morning. Thus, he could water 96 plants each day. All trees were planted in different parts of Bhavnagar. He used to go to these different areas to water plants on different days. This has been his routine for the past 4 years. “I used to spend 2 hours daily to water the plants. This has been my routine these days, all these years,” he adds.
