Govt teachers prowl for transfers

DSE chief threatens to suspend teachers for evading regular school work and hanging around the department

Hyderabad: Even after one month of commencement of schools in the State, the academics in several government schools are yet to take off, thanks to the ongoing transfers and rationalisation of teachers. Evading regular classes, government school teachers are running from pillar to post in the Department of School Education (DSE) and in Telangana Secretariat to get transfers of their choice.

Taking one step ahead, some teachers are using their political clout to impress upon the officials in the school education department and Secretariat to have their say in the transfers. Ever since the process has begun, every day MLAs and MLCs from the ruling and opposition parties throng to DSE to negotiate with the officials.

As the school education department officials are busy in transfers and rationalisation work, there is none to checkmate the erring teachers. Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari, who had foreseen the situation, has already warned the teachers not to make rounds at the departments or counselling centres. However, his warning seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

With the situation reaching its peak on Tuesday afternoon, Commissioner of DSE T Chiranjeevulu threatened to suspend teachers for evading regular school work and hanging around the department. He told them that everything was being recorded on CCTV. “I will suspend you, if you don’t leave the premises immediately,” Chiranjeevulu told the teachers.

On the other hand, teachers blamed the government for this situation. They say that every year, the teacher transfers and rationalisation are completed during summer vacation. However, this year, the government initiated the process the summer break. State Teachers Union president Raj Reddy said, “Every year, the process gets completed by the end of the summer vacation.

However, this year, due to lackadaisical approach of the government, the process has commenced in June. Even after issuing notification for transfers, the government kept on changing the guidelines. One should not blame teachers for this situation,” he stated. Reddy said because of the indifferent attitude of the government, the students already lost nearly one month of the academics. An official said academic calendar prepared by the department remained on the papers due to process of transfers.
