Garbage piles up in city as civic staff strike continues

Hyderabad: The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad have turned into a garbage bin as the indefinite strike called by the Municipal employees entered third day on Wednesday and the efforts made by the government to persuade the employees to call off the strike failed..
Even as the Municipal employees staged massive protests at the GHMC Headquarters and other zonal offices in the city and the striking employees foiled the GHMC's efforts to clean the garbage and attacked the employees who were taken on temporary basis at several places in the city. The government continued to drag its feet on the demands of workers.

Though the Ministers Naini Narsimha Reddy and Eatala Rajender promised the employees unions that they would discuss their demands with the Chief Minister and try to find a solution, no such effort was made till Wednesday. The Chief Minister is scheduled to go on a tour of Khammam and Warangal districts from Thursday.
According to rough estimates, nearly 15 tonnes of garbage got accumulated on the streets of Hyderabad. The situation turned worse in the Old City where more garbage piled up during the month of Ramzan in view of Iftar and other festivities. The employees have been demanding that increase in payment from Rs. 8,500 to Rs. 16,000 per month, regularisation of all contract employees and health cards for all municipal employees. The government will have to bear an additional burden of nearly Rs. 200 crore per annum if it accepts the demands.
