Hyderabad: From Parsigutta slum in the city to the most happening State in United States of America, 19-year-old G Pravalika, a student of Nizam College and alumna of Telangana State Welfare Residential Magnet School (TSWRMS) is set to head to US to purse a diploma programme.

PravalikaPravalika succeeded in the US Consulate’s Community College Initiative Programme (CCIP) to study one-year diploma programme in Business Management and Administration at Pierce College, Lakewood, Washington. She is currently pursuing degree second year in Nizam College.

The 19-year old who is the eldest daughter of an auto driver says, “I never dreamt that I will go to the US to pursue studies. Sir (TSWRMS Secretary RS Praveen) took an initiative and made me write an entrance examination for community college which I qualified. Later, I got a call from the US Consulate for an interview and I cleared it.

To Test my English proficiency, I was told to appear for Test of English for International Communication which I qualified,” says elated Pravalika and adds that two employees in the secretary’s office sponsored fee of Rs 15,000 for training in Test of English for International Communication.

Pravalika credited her success to the TSWRMS and VOICE 4 Girls-a city based NGO which partnered with the US Consulate in Hyderabad to send a social welfare student to a community college in the US. “VOICE works with economically and socially disadvantaged girls to enable them to reach out for their dreams,” says Anusha Bharadwaj, Executive Director at VOICE.

“Girls we work with have immense potential to change their communities and society for the better and the CCIP is a great opportunity to achieve that,” she adds. Pravalika’s proud father G Vijay Kumar who runs a rented auto in the city says “I have three daughters and Pravalika is the eldest. I studied in a residential school.

Due to my financial constraints I had to admit my daughters in government residential schools. My daughters are excellent in the academics and they have made me proud,” Vijay adds. Pramila, mother of Pravalika states that society looked down upon the family when they decided to put Pravalika in the government residential school.

“There were sleepless nights for several days after joining her in the residential school. We used to cry everyday remembering her. Now we are very proud of what my daughter has achieved,” she said. The Nizam College authorities permitted Pravalika to pursue the course and she will fly to the US in the first week of August.

Nizam College Principal Prof TLN Swamy said that the college has decided to coach her for Civil Services examination after her return from the US. “Pravalika comes from a very poor family. She is excellent in the academics and has a bright future. We have printed her success in the college magazine and decided to give her coaching for Civil Services,” Swamy said.
