Hyderabad: It is worrying situation for the state government as 229 mandals in six districts of the state have received deficit rainfall this year. Unless moderate to heavy rains are registered this month, Telangana will be heading towards a drought.

  • Deficient rainfall in 229 mandals across 6 districts
  • Weather forecast for August grim

Weather data from June 1 to July 30 indicate that six districts - Medak, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad -- have recorded deficit rainfall. There are 229 mandals in these districts that have received deficit rainfall this season.

The situation is slightly better in Adilabad and Nalgonda districts where normal rainfall was witnessed. People of Warangal and Khammam districts, especially farmers, are lucky since both the districts recorded excess rainfall.

While the normal rainfall reading from June 1 till July 30 is 360.2 mm, the State received only 299.6 mm. The percentage of deficient rainfall is minus 17 per cent. If we consider July month alone, the situation is alarming since the deficient rainfall stood at minus 66 per cent.

However, due to excess rains recorded in June, the overall figure jumped to minus 17 per cent. Rainfall in August will be crucial for Telangana as it will indicate the chances of facing drought or not.

According to YK Reddy, Director, Meteorological Centre, Begumpet chances of good rainfall in August are less. Due to depression effect, scattered rainfall (lower than normal) could be witnessed in north Telangana. It is not good news either in second and third weeks of the coming month with subdued monsoon expected in most parts of the State, he said.
